7 Must-See Summer Events in NYC

Bryant Park in NYC

The instant that the weather gets sunny, New Yorkers head outside. Though the beach is always a popular destination, here are some other seasonal festivities that mark the warm months and are exclusively offered in NYC. While you’re out trying new destinations, try a new way to travel to your destination.

Prospect Park Bandshell Concerts
May – July, Prospect Park Bandshell

The Brooklyn Bandshell in Prospect Park is always packed to the brim, and people even hang outside of the fence when it reaches capacity. Proving that the only thing better than a concert is a free concert, BRIC hosts some extraordinary talent with both indie and mainstream artists. Bring your blanket, picnic basket, and best friends and head out to this summer’s performances, which include Josh Ritter, Gregory Porter, Public Enemy, and more.

Shakespeare in the Park
May 24 – August 14, Delacorte Theater in Central Park

Every summer since 1962, the Public Theater produces a Shakespeare play for free in Central Park. There’s a particular kind of mysticism in sitting outdoors and watching those timeless words being performed in the warmth of a summer night with the Belvedere Castle hanging overhead. The productions have previously featured Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, Blythe Danner, and many more. In addition, audience members are welcome to bring their own food or purchase refreshments and snacks from the Public Theater.

Governors Ball in NYC

Governors Ball
June 3-5, Randall’s Island Park

Gov ball is a music festival held on Randall’s Island. It hosts musicians of all genres from rock to hip-hop as well as a plethora of popular NYC restaurants and food trucks like Luke’s Lobsters, Waffles & Dinges, Mexicue, and more. Plus, if you need a break from the music, you can check out activities like Silent disco, ping pong, and much more. The festival is always a good time, from bonding with scenesters to the epic lineup of artists
that are often curated and slated to play.

Northside Fest
June 9-12, Williamsburg and Greenpoint

Now in its 8th year, Northside is a discovery festival that takes place in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. It’s separated into three components: music, innovation, and content. The music portion this year will feature Kacey Musgraves, Brian Wilson, Conor Oberst, and more. The content portion will uncover what’s next in original video content, and the innovation portion showcases founders and leaders in tech, media, and creativity. Learn about some new tools, take in the stage view on the water at the outside venue, or go crazy and grab your tickets to every event.

Jazz Age Lawn Party

Jazz Age Lawn Party
June 11 & 12 and August 13 & 14, Governors Island

New York City’s original prohibition era inspired gathering happens two weekends a year. Guests are invited to discover and relive that swinging period in American history. Most folks take it to the max and bring out their best 1920s attire while tapping their feet to the up-tempo brass music. From dance lessons to a pie contest, there are tons of fun activities to join in and explore on the lawn.

Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
Every Friday, Lakeside at Prospect Park

This roller rink has been in existence since 2008 on the Coney Island boardwalk and recently moved to Prospect Park. Every Friday the 16,000 square foot rink hosts theme parties that are a total blast. This summer, catch nights dedicated to Prince vs. Michael Jackson (June 3), Boy Bands & 90s Pop (June 10), a Born This Way tribute (June 24), and more. Plus, enjoy the green roof terrace, which serves a selection of beer, wine, and specialty items from Bluestone Café.
