3 Fun Things to Do in NYC During Thanksgiving Weekend

With Thanksgiving approaching, most New Yorkers are looking forward to three things: a delicious Thanksgiving feast, a fun family get-together and a 4-day weekend away from the office.

If you’re staying in New York City this year, you may be searching for a few activities and events that are geared for the holiday season. Here are three ways you can enjoy Thanksgiving in NYC with family, friends and loved ones while setting a festive tone for the rest of the year.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Whether you live in New York City or you’re just visiting for the Thanksgiving weekend, the Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day parade is sure to be one of the highlights of the holiday season. 2017 marks the parade’s 91st year, and for anyone who’s never made it to the parade, watching it at home doesn’t compare to seeing it happen live. Especially when every year the parade grows bigger and more captivating than the previous season.

The parade route runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. down Central Park West before turning down 6th Avenue, then completes its 2.5-mile journey at Macy’s in Herald Square. If you want a sneak peek of the floats and balloons the day before, you can even plan a visit to the pre-parade balloon inflation that takes place from 3-10 p.m. next to the American Museum of Natural History the day before Thanksgiving.

As the New York City climate gets chillier, now is a great time to embrace the approaching winter weather by visiting the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park. The park serves as a great destination for couples on the hunt for a romantic evening, as well as groups of every size and age range searching for a fun daytime or nighttime activity.

If you haven’t already been to the village during the Thanksgiving weekend, you may be missing out on all it has to offer. From the park’s 17,000 square foot ice rink, which offers free admission, to its great selection shops and pop-up restaurant Public Fare, you and whoever you bring with you is sure to have a memorable holiday-themed experience.

NYC Pilgrim Pedal or Turkey Trot

Prepare for this year’s Thanksgiving feast ahead of time by participating in the family-friendly activity known as the NYC Pilgrim Pedal. The event starts on Thanksgiving Day at 8 a.m. at the corner of 23rd Street and the East River in Manhattan, and takes you on a 10 to 12-mile one-way trip (or 20-24 if you’re going the full route) around Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. And if you’re bringing the little ones with you, you should know that the biking pace is leisurely, so you won’t have to worry about donning your racing gear.

For something a bit brisker in terms of activity, there are several Turkey Trots happening around New York City on Thanksgiving Day. The pinnacle event, of course, is the New York City Turkey Trot, which offers a 15K run or 5K walk across parts of Roosevelt Island and starts at 9:15 a.m. Just be sure to register beforehand, or plan on showing up at 8 a.m. for a last-minute signup.

If you’re looking for another option, there’s also the Prospect Park Track Club Turkey Trot, the Long Beach Turkey Trot, or the Coney Island Turkey Trot, the last of which features a carnivalesque landscape that should keep you entertained throughout the 5K route.
