The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Affectionately known as, “The Met,” the Metropolitan Museum of Art NYC was founded in 1870 and is among the most visited museums in the world. The space contains over two million works of art, and the permanent collection hosts art from classic antiquity to ancient Egypt, painting and sculptures from several recognizable names, and a massive collection of American and modern art. There are 17 separate departments, each with a specialized staff of curators and scholars who work together to curate extraordinary art exhibits.

Whitney Museum of American Art
From 1966 to 2014, The Whitney was located at 945 Madison Avenue in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, which closed in October 2014. The new Whitney museum, which was designed by Renzo Piano and opened on May 1, 2015, is currently located at 99 Gansevoort Street in Manhattan’s West Village/Meatpacking District. The new structure spans 200,000 square feet and 8 floors, which includes 600 works by over 400 artists, art gallery spaces, an education center, theater, conversation lab, and library and reading rooms within this museum of fine arts.

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
Located in the Upper East Side, the Guggenheim collects impressionist, post-impressionist, early modern, and contemporary art, as well as various special exhibitions. Originally established as the “Museum of Non-Objective Painting,” the Guggenheim may be one of the few museums that is less known for the artwork inside than it is for its renowned architecture, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The cylinder shaped building has a continuous spiral leading all the way up to the ceiling’s skylight. The museum has grown organically throughout its eight decades, and in 2013, nearly 1.2 million people visited the museum.

The Frick Collection
Located within the Henry Clay Frick House in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, The Frick Collection showcases Henry Clay Frick's art collection. The collection is one of the premiere small art museums in the United States, and includes many paintings and fine furnishings carefully curated throughout the six galleries within the house. The collection also features paintings, sculptures, and porcelain works by many famous European artists such as Rembrandt. The Frick Collection also oversees the Frick Art Reference Library, a research institution for scholars, art professionals, students, and collectors interested in art.

The Museum of Modern Art
Located in Midtown Manhattan, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) collects modernist art and is often identified as one of the largest and most influential modern art museums in the world. People visit the MoMa to view works of architecture, design, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, illustrated books and artist’s books, film, and electronic media. MoMa is also known for the MoMa Library, which contains approximately 300,000 books and exhibition catalogs, over 1,000 periodical titles, and over 40,000 files about various artists. The museum is open every day, and garners tons of foot traffic. Such was the case in 2011, when 2.8 million people visited the museum.
