NYC Opera Season: 4 Shows You Shouldn’t Miss

While you could argue that opera season is a year-round affair, the final months of the year often have the greatest turnout, as families and friends gather for an evening of stunning operatic performances.

If you haven’t been to a NYC opera in a while, or you’d love to plan a date or get-together at the opera for the very first time, here are just a few of the shows you won’t want to miss this year.

La Bohème

La Bohème stands as one of the oldest and most celebrated operas in history, with its first showing having taken place in 1896. Based on a novel by Henri Murger, the opera tells the story of a relationship between Rodolfo and Mimi, two artists that fall in love, and are eventually faced with tragic, unforeseen circumstances. Brought to life by composer Giacomo Puccini, the opera runs from October 2nd through March 10, 2018 at The NYC Metropolitan Opera, and is perfectly suited for couples of all ages.

Dolores Claiborne

If an intriguing psychodrama adapted from a Stephen King novel piques your interest during the month of October, the Dolores Claiborne opera will certainly fit the bill. Running from October 22nd through October 29th at the 59E59E Theaters by the New York City Opera, Dolores Claiborne touches on some darker, Halloween-inspired themes that center around a complex murder mystery – and questions of long-time loyalty. Probably best for adults, the opera is sure to leave you guessing as to what really happened, and how things will eventually turn out.

Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann)

Also playing at The NYC Metropolitan Opera is the moving story of a tortured poet, as he struggles with love and staying inspired as an artist. Like La Bohème, the opera was first performed in the late 1800s, which demonstrates its timelessness as a work of operatic perfection. While Les Contes d’Hoffmann only runs for one month, you still have time to catch a performance through October 28th. If the relationship between an artist and his faithful Muse sounds like a delightful evening, you’ll be enchanted by this opera’s complicated but romantic storytelling.

Dominick Argento’s 90th Birthday

Renowned composer Dominick Argento is turning 90 at the end of October. To celebrate, the New York City Opera and Carnegie Hall are pairing up to host a celebration of the event on November 9th at Zankel Hall. As part of the revelries, a concert performance will take place, featuring two of the composer’s most beloved one-act operas: Miss Havisham's Wedding Night, and A Water Bird Talk. As the composer of fourteen operas over six decades, attendees will definitely be captured by the drama and beauty of the night’s performances. However, the event only happens for one night – on November 9th – so be sure to pick up your tickets early.

Planning an evening at the opera with your loved ones? Make the night even more spectacular by booking a ride with Luxor.
